Brief Overview
The doctoral examination comes at the end of a long process for the doctorate and is a crucial part of the doctoral journey for candidates. This session will review and break down the process for Supervisors and Directors of Study to outline the support they can provide their candidates through the submission of the thesis, the oral examination (viva), and assisting with possible revisions to complete the examination process for the doctoral degree.
The intended audience is for supervisors with mixed levels of experience in supporting doctoral candidates. It has been specifically written for Middlesex University staff. All are welcome
Session summary:
This session aims to bring research supervisors together and stimulate peer-to-peer discussions on preparing doctoral candidates for examination. It facilitates the sharing of practice, strategies, tips and techniques, and encourages self-reflection among supervisors.
Learning objectives:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
● identify key roles, responsibilities and expectations of the supervisor in supporting candidates for doctoral examination
● develop strategies for supporting candidates effectively for doctoral examination, considering diverse candidate needs, university support services and resources to support preparing candidates for the doctoral examination
● recognise and address common challenges in supporting candidates for doctoral examination.
